New Nokia smartphone fails to turn tide

The new Nokia smart phone Lumia 800 is shown off at Nokia world, London, October 26, 2011. Reuters/Paul Hackett

Nokia’s long-awaited Windows phones may be too little, too late in the smartphone war dominated by Apple and Google, despite positive reviews by handset critics.

Its first Windows model, the Lumia 800, has won little interest from consumers, with only 2 percent of Europeans in the market for a smartphone saying they would pick it, according to a survey by Exane BNP Paribas.
Analysts said there was nothing particularly wrong with the sleek-looking handsets, other than a software glitch on some models affecting battery life, but consumers were just not biting.
Smartphones using Microsoft software have just a 2 percent market share, compared with Google Android at around 50 percent and Apple at 15-20 percent.
“There isn’t much room left for a third ecosystem. The smartphone market is consolidating fast,” said Bernstein analyst Pierre Ferragu who rates Nokia a “sell.”
Nokia’s shares have fallen over 20 percent since the October 26 launch of the new phone, with investors fearing Nokia would be unable to claw back the market share it has lost in the past several years to rivals like Apple.
Phones using Nokia’s old Symbian software, which it decided to dump in favor of Microsoft, are still in circulation and outsell Windows phones 10 to 1.
But as Nokia keeps shifting to Windows, sales of Symbian have a lot of room to disappoint over coming quarters and some analysts are warning of lower dividends and weaker-than-expected earnings ahead.
Now even Microsoft has started to hedge its bets, making its software increasingly available for rivals to Windows Phone.
Smartphones are built on mobile computing platforms, and the most modern combine web browsers, navigation systems, cameras and portable music systems. A so-called “feature” phone — a market Nokia still dominates — has far fewer of these applications.
First step?
Nokia officials defended the Lumia, and a spokesman said there was “positive momentum” while declining to give any data. One executive argued that Nokia had never counted on the first Lumia phones to lead to a quick turnaround but instead expected it to be the first step towards recovery.
In fact, there are just as many analysts recommending a “buy” on the shares as there are “sell” ratings.
Those who are keeping the faith believe the new assault on the smartphone market may be enough to give Nokia a place at the table.
Many of them say the range of concerns over the Finnish company are fully priced into the shares, while the company’s strong cash position and some prized patent assets could attract a takeover approach.
“With current, and upcoming models, Nokia can win back market share in both — in feature phones and in smartphones,” said Swedbank analyst Jari Honko, who rates the shares a “buy.” “Today’s share price does not take into account any recovery in the Nokia market position.”
Optimists also cite an improvement in Nokia’s product portfolio, which looked out of date when Stephen Elop took over as the chief executive in September 2010.
And while some argue there is no room for a third alternative to Google and Apple, some developers and operators do see room for more competitors in this market.
The 2012 Windows 8 upgrade could also attract a wider audience by making the way smartphones, tablets and PCs work more similar.
For investors, the biggest positive surprise could be an acquisition offer. After Nokia signed a deal with Microsoft, rumors of full takeover by Microsoft or at least buyout of smartphone unit have made rounds on a weekly basis.
Last week the stock jumped 4 percent when Danske Bank suggested Microsoft could buy Nokia’s smartphone unit.
But even if investors do not get a rich buyout – online gambling company Unibet is putting odds on Microsoft buying Nokia in 2012 at just 1 out of 15 – analysts say the company’s relatively-solid finances should at least offer some security.
Nokia had 1.36 euros per share of cash at the end of the last quarter. It also has a strong patent portfolio – on its own worth more than a euro per share – and owns top digital mapping firm Navteq and half of No. 2 mobile network gear maker Nokia Siemens Networks.

Wow! Lindsay Lohan, posing nude for Playboy, says she's learned from mistakes

by:  Reuters
LOS ANGELES - Actress Lindsay Lohan, in her first interview since being sent to jail last month for a probation violation, tells Playboy that she has learned to be accountable for her mistakes.

The "Mean Girls" star told the magazine in an interview accompanying her 10-page nude pictorial that during the past five years she's come to understand "that ultimately we are responsible for ourselves and our own actions."
Magazine founder Hugh Hefner has said he advanced the street date of the highly-anticipated issue -- in which a blonde Lohan channels her idol Marilyn Monroe's famed 1953 Playboy photo spread -- in part because photos were leaked online.
The Lohan issue hit Playboy's website on Saturday and the magazine lands on newsstands December 16, one day after Lohan's scheduled interview on Ellen Degeneres' daytime TV talk show. Excerpts of the Playboy interview were released on Saturday.
The former child star whose career has suffered in recent years following arrests for drunken driving, drug possession and theft, told Playboy she would have done things differently in her recent years of trouble.
"Looking back, I probably would have listened to and taken more advice from the people whom I admire and would have followed through with it more," Lohan said.
"My stubbornness at 18 and 19-years-old got in the way," she said. "During the past five years, I've learned that time flies faster than you think, and because you only live once you have to learn from your mistakes, live your dreams and be accountable."
In November, Lohan was sentenced to 30 days in jail for violating her probation on recent criminal charges, but served less than a day behind bars due to overcrowding.
In an excerpt that apparently references her decision to pose nude for the magazine, Lohan said: "Sex and sexuality are a part of nature and I go along with nature. I think Marilyn Monroe once said that."
And the actress, who first gained fame playing twin sisters in 1998 Disney film "The Parent Trap," said she doesn't understand why her life has become tabloid fodder.
"I have no idea why there is this fascination with everything I do," she said. "I suppose it is all part of this trend of people wanting to know every single detail of a celebrity's life.
"I mean, once we get to the point where magazines are doing pictorials on my wardrobe to court, that's just so unimportant," Lohan said.

Renato Corona impeachment: 7 votes to acquit, 16 to convict "ano kaya ang mangyayari?"

By: Karl John C. Reyes, InterAksyon.com
MANILA, Philippines - Chief Justice Renato needs seven votes in his favor from 22 senator-judges to be acquitted by the Impeachment Court, which will be convened this afternoon.

Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile said that with the election of Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago to the International Criminal Court, the number of senators goes down from 23 to 22, depending on when she assumes her post - before or during the trial proper.
“Seven positive votes ang kailangan ni Corona para ma-acquit siya. Kung full 24, kailangan niya 9. Kung 23, 8 (Corona needs seven votes to acquit. If full 24, he needs nine. If 23, eight),” Enrile said.
At present, there are 23 members of the Upper Chamber lead by Enrile in the majority bloc with President Pro-Tempore Jinggoy Estrada, Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III, Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano; and Senators Edgardo Angara. Joker Arroyo, Pia Cayetano, Defensor-Santiago, Francis Escudero, Teofisto Guingona III, Gregorio Honasan, Panfilo Lacson, Loren Legarda, Ferdinand Marcos Jr.,  Sergio Osmena III, Francis Pangilinan, Aquilino Pimentel III, Ralph Recto, Ramon Revilla Jr., Antonio Trillanes IV, and Manuel B. Villar.
“With the election of Sen. Santiago, magiging 22 na lang kami,” Enrile said.
Under Article 11, Section 6, the Accountability of Public Officers said that “No person shall be convicted (by the Impeachment Court) without the concurrence of the two-thirds of all the Members of the Senate.”
“Only 16. Kailangan 16 ang boto (Sixteen is needed) to convict. Even if we are only 20, even if we are only 17. Kailangan pa rin ang 16,” Enrile explained.
Yung 16, pag nabawasan ang number ng senador, boto yun sa respondent. Meron ng bakante na isa, boto na yun sa respondent. Merong nababawasan, magiging 22 kami, yung dalawa, boto sa respondent yun (If the number of senators go down, it will be a vote for the respondent. We already have one vacant seat, that's a vote for the respondent. We will be further reduced to 22, so those two votes will be for the respondent)," he further explained.

PCs with pirated software infected after installation, Microsoft study says!

By: J. M. Tuazon, InterAksyon.com ·

MANILA, Philippines – In a bid to curb software piracy around the world, software giant Microsoft recently released a study indicating that 24 percent of PCs that run pirated software get infected immediately after installation, among other similar effects.

In a research done by Harrison Group and compiled by Microsoft, it was discovered that one in five of counterfeit Microsoft PCs tested by the company were unable to download Windows updates.
Software updates from Windows are critical since they patch recently known vulnerabilities that are being exploited by people behind the creation of malware.
Since these PCs with counterfeit Windows copies are unable to download updates, they are left vulnerable against the effects of viruses and other malware.
The study found that the effects are observable across the board. “The inability to download automatic updates was found both in software that had been downloaded for free and in software that had been purchased from a street market or hardware retailer,” it pointed out.
Performance-wise, the study noted that machines with genuine OSes boot faster 60 percent of the time, load files and documents faster 75 percent of the time, and generally demonstrate superior performance rates 67 percent of the time.
Moreover, battery life is 60 percent longer for machines with genuine copies of Windows installed on them, it added.
The results of the study come on the heels of Microsoft’s efforts to eliminate pirated copies of its software — arguably its bread and butter — from the market, in an initiative it has dubbed as “Play Fair Day.”
In a separate study, Microsoft revealed that manufacturing companies in Brazil, Russia, India and China — more commonly known as the BRIC region — that use pirated software are essentially stealing $1.5 billion from their competitors.
“Unfairness from piracy creates a staggering $3 billion of competitive disadvantage per year across manufacturers in Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe and Asia-Pacific regions,” it added.
On a closer note, the Business Software Alliance — an international advocacy group which seeks to halt the spread of illegal software worldwide — recently reported that the local software industry lost as much as P12 billion to piracy in 2010.
“Although we have seen increased efforts by the Philippine government and the Information Technology (IT) industry in protecting software copyright, we continue to face huge challenges in trying to drive piracy rates down,” said BSA Philippine Consultant Atty. Bien Marquez.
For the past four years, the piracy rate had remained unmoved at 69 percent. The group had also earlier noted that Microsoft’s products — particularly its operating system Windows — is one of the most pirated pieces of software in the Philippines.

Miss Earth candidate in a mess with Pinoy netizens "Sinabihan ba naman na madume ang Pilipinas"

By: Abigail Kwok, InterAksyon.com
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino netizens are up in arms following a purported Facebook post by Ms. Earth-USA candidate Nicole Kelley where she criticized the Philippines as “so dirty and noisy.”

In a Facebook post made last November 8, Kelley posted: “I hardly made it to Manila and we already attended a ridiculous TV show. So annoying!!! These people want to touch you and be with you all the time!! I can’t understand a word they say. I can’t wait to go back home. This country is so dirty and noisy. I’m scared to eat!!! What a mess. On a lighter note, I don’t see any real competition. Will keep you updated my lov

The post was allegedly made few hours after Kelley guested at the popular game show “Wil Time Big Time.”
A couple of hours later, after the post was made, Kelley immediately deleted the post and claimed that her Facebook was hacked.
In her post on her fan page, Kelley wrote: “I know that there has been something maliciously circulated about me and I want everyone to know that I ABSOLUTELY did NOT say anything of the sort I am very sorry about this!!! Someone hacked my account and has been posting comments as me. I was at a community garden tour this morning when it was posted and I am very disappointed,” Kelley wrote.
“On a better note I am ABSOLUTELY enjoying my time here in the Philippines, the people are fantastic!! Our hotel at the Oakwood is beautiful and I can’t wait till all the other girls arrive!!! Hope to post pictures soon!” she said. The post was made on November 19. (Video message below)
However, many Filipino netizens were unforgiving. Kelley’s Facebook page was bombarded with negative comments from Filipinos. One user wrote: “You’re no Ms. Earth…because your personality is white trash. You’re no longer welcome in the Philippines.”
Another wrote: “The stupid remark you made in Facebook is the opposite of what you are representing. So, there is no need for you to have that title and please cut the BS that your account got hacked. It will be so easy for the investigators to find that out. You are really a stupid blonde if you have not figured that out.”

On December 3, Latin-American beauty Olga Alava of Ecuador was crowned as Miss Earth 2011, while the Ms. Earth Water title was given to Miss Philippines Athena Imperial.
Miss Earth 2011 was originally scheduled to take place in Bangkok, but massive flooding in Thailand prompted the organizer to move the international beauty pageant to Manila.

Globe banks on long-standing Apple relationship in iPhone 4S push

By: J. M. Tuazon, InterAksyon.com

MANILA, Philippines – Second-ranked Globe Telecom Inc. is capitalizing on its long-standing relationship with Apple as it announced the availability of the iPhone 4S on their network on December 16, the company said in a statement Monday.
Globe President and Chief Executive Officer Ernest Cu stressed that their six-year partnership with Apple has allowed the company to offer the “complete iPhone and iPad product suites” to its subscribers.
“Backed by several years [of] experience in handling Apple mobile devices, Globe is better-equipped to deal with the specific needs that face iPhone users, particularly in mobile data,” Cu pointed out.
Cu is reacting on recent reports that chief rival Smart Communications will also be offering Apple’s new iPhone beginning December 16, signalling the end of Globe’s exclusive distribution deal with Apple that dates back to 2007.
The telco executive said its long experience of offering the iPhone to Filipinos has given his company the chance to tailor mobile data offerings specifically to smartphone users.
“We have developed offers and services that cater to the mobile browsing habits of a wide variety of consumers,” Cu stressed.
The Ayala-owned wireless provider also emphasized its strong performance on the mobile data space, which now accounts for half of its total mobile service revenues, “on the back of new, affordable services that promote the use of mobile internet for social networking, search engine and email services.”
For its part, Smart has said that the iPhone 4S offering will only bring in more postpaid subscribers to the network, which now stands at about half a million.
PLDT Board Member and TV5 President Ray C. Espinosa earlier said: “When this happens, this will make us the undisputed leader in postpaid subscriptions.”
InterAksyon.com is the online news portal of TV5.
Smart said its recently acquired telco, Sun Cellular, will also be offering postpaid plans for the iPhone 4S. Sun currently has a postpaid subscriber base of 1.5 million.
Globe, on the other hand, has reached 1.37 million postpaid users as of end-September, “up 39 percent year-on-year.”
All eyes will be on the two fiercely competitive telcos as they simultaneously launch the iPhone 4S 11 days from now. Both have also already started taking pre-orders for Apple’s new smartphone, but none of them have revealed official pricing plans for the sought-after smartphone.
